Curriculum Development

Curricula based on the documentary film are currently being developed by The Louis Stokes Institute for Opportunity in STEM Education. (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The Stokes Institute is an initiative of the Washington, DC-based Council for Opportunity in Education.

Dr. Kathryn Kailikole is the Director of the Stokes Institute. She is an experienced curriculum developer who holds a doctoral degree in education from the University of California San Diego, a masters degree in mathematics education from the University of California Santa Cruz, and a bachelors degree in applied mathematics from the University of California Berkeley.

Dr. Kailkole and her staff are developing high school and college curricula based on 500 hours of videotape collected during the 5-year research project and filming of “Why Us? Left Behind and Dying.” The curricula will be pilot tested at with teachers and student researchers, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
